Grey Horse Slut

Grey Horse Slut

That’s me! When I first thought about starting a blog, I wanted to name it The Grey Horse Slut. But then I kind of talked myself out of it because of the whole ‘slut’ part. I didn’t want anyone to think I was a slut in general…I’m just a slut for grey horses. Meaning – I really, really love them.

Then I decided to take the focus off of my grey horse sluttiness and just concentrate on my Misty misadventures instead; thus – The Sassy Grey was born! And though I wouldn’t kick a bay or chestnut horse out of bed, figuratively, greys will always be my favorite. Grey horses are like blondes – they just have more fun!

Best horse/Disney movie ever…although they spelled “gray” incorrectly. 😉

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that my affinity for greys began in early childhood thanks to our family horse, Traveller, but I think this movie had something to do with it. Disney’s The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit…still my all-time favorite horse movie ever. First – it’s Disney – it’s a winner right there. But then there’s cute Dean Jones, a young, adorable Kurt Russell, a horse crazy girl named Helen…and a handsome, beer-drinking grey show jumper named Aspercel. What’s not to love? I would highly recommend this movie to anyone – grey horse fanatic or not!

If you love your children, you will buy this movie for them!

This movie is my childhood. The only video rental store that carried it – and one copy at that! – was called Michael’s in Perry Hall. It closed up years ago, but was located where the Dunkin’ Donuts is now, across from Safeway on Belair Road. Anyway, I remember begging my mom to stop there every few weeks, and sure enough, there it would be on the shelf. I was this video’s “best customer” according to the check out clerk.

I was devastated when the store closed without warning because NO ONE else carried my Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit! Then one day, my brother randomly found the VHS for sale in a K-Mart and he surprised me with it!

Wasn’t Kurt Russell adorable?

I loved every character in this movie with Aspercel being my favorite, naturally, but I also loved sweet Helen, the teenage daughter of Dean Jones. All Helen wanted was a horse of her own; she was shy and quiet and lacked self-esteem – but not on the back of a horse! I wanted to be just like her and ride in hunter jumper shows!

In the movie, Aspercel is a pain reliever, like aspirin, and Dean Jones’ character works in advertising. So it’s no coincidence when his daughter gets a horse named Aspercel!

Also – in the movie, the finale takes place at the Washington International Horse Show, a show that is still in existence today. I try to attend this show every October…and year after year, I can’t help but find myself looking for my horse in the grey flannel suit. Until, that is, I remember I have my very own one at home!

Dean Jones with the beer-drinking Aspercel!
